What is a womb surround process workshop?
A womb surround Process Workshop is a small group format developed by Dr Raymond Castellino in 1992 where a safe and welcoming ‘womb surround’ is created. In this environment participants are able to explore and re-pattern early prenatal, birth and attachment imprinting that impact their lives today. Material from other stages of life may be worked with as well.
This format was created by Dr Castellino because he found that ‘complete and lasting transformations most often happen in small group settings’. Usually there are 5-7 participants in a workshop, over a span of 3-5 days. There is ample time for personal work to occur in a spacious way, that allows for integration of your own piece as well as your experience of other’s. The venue is most often a comfortable private home space which enables the cost to be reasonable given the size of the group.*Re-pattern and heal wounding imprints from conception thru childhood.

The Earliest Chapter of Our Story Lives in the Body
Before we had words…
before we had thoughts…
before we had a name…
we were already experiencing life.
Floating in the fluid rhythms of the womb, we were sensing everything:
• movement
• vibration
• pressure
• sound
• emotional tone
• the relational field of our parents and ancestors
These early experiences become the first language of the nervous system.
They shape how we feel about:
• safety
• belonging
• connection
• love
• and our place in the world.
The body remembers these early moments long after the mind has forgotten.
Prenatal and perinatal research now confirms what many wisdom traditions have always known:
Human consciousness begins before birth.
From the moment of conception we are sensing, learning, adapting, and organizing ourselves in relationship to our environment.
If those early moments were supportive, the nervous system learns:
Life is safe.
Connection is possible.
I belong here.If those moments were overwhelming or unsupported, the body may organize protective patterns that continue into adulthood. These patterns are not mistakes.
They are brilliant survival responses created by an intelligent body.
This means they live in the body as:
• sensations
• movement patterns
• nervous system responses
• emotional tone
• relational expectations
They exist beneath language.
Which is why traditional talk therapy often cannot reach them.
But the body knows the way back.
The Womb Surround Process creates a safe and compassionate environment where these early body memories can begin to unfold and reorganize.
Within a carefully supported group field, participants are invited to slow down and listen to the subtle language of sensation.
Through presence, attunement, and relational support, the nervous system is given the opportunity to:
complete unfinished survival responses
• release protective tension patterns
• experience new states of safety and support
• reorganize early relational imprints
This work does not force or push.
It invites the natural intelligence of the body to guide the process.
One of the most powerful aspects of Womb Surround work is the presence of a supportive human field
When we are held with:
compassion
• attuned listening
• patience
• and respectful pacing
the nervous system can finally experience something it may have needed from the very beginning:
a sense of being safely surrounded.
From this place, the body can soften, reorganize, and discover new possibilities.
People who participate in Womb Surround workshops often report:
• a deep sense of emotional and physical relief
• greater nervous system regulation
• feeling more at home in their body
• more authentic connection with others
• release of long-standing relational patterns
• renewed access to creativity and vitality
Many describe the experience as remembering something essential about who they are.
At the deepest level, this work reminds us that we are not separate from life.
Our bodies are still made of fluid rhythms and living intelligence.
Within every cell is the memory of the original ocean we came from.
When we slow down enough to feel the subtle language of the body, we begin to rediscover the creative movement of life itself.
Healing happens not by fixing ourselves…
but by allowing life to move again.

The Body Holds Implicit Memory

Please come and enjoy the leading edge of womb surround and prenatal and perinatal somatic health (PPN) work with an emerging leader in the birth psychology movement. Frank Carbone is a Continuum teacher trained by Emilie Conrad, and a prenatal and perinatal practitioner trained by Ray Castellino. He has assisted the leaders in the PPN field for years, including Ray Castellino, Mary Jackson and Tara Blasco.
Maya Kokatay is a Registered Craniosacral Therapist, Certified Infant Massage Instructor, Childbirth Educator, Doula, and Midwife Assistant. She has spent the last two decades supporting hundreds of families through their birth and postpartum journeys. Maya draws from her studies in the field of pre and perinatal psychology, trauma-informed therapeutic bodywork, and her own journey of parenting to provide families with compassionate and attuned care.
This special Continuum Womb Surround work, Womb Continuum, is a blend of Continuum movement therapy and womb surround work developed by Ray Castellino.
We work in small group settings, and explore creative and pleasurable ways to play is what I call "The Umbilical Field". My own experiences as a devoted Continuum student of Emilie Conrad has led me to a vivd and healing path holding a womb space to explore the original template of being created.
The intention of a Womb Continuum is to heal and re-pattern early life and to create more options for current behavior and ways of being in relationship. In addition to healing prenatal, birth and other early trauma, this process has the principle impact of encouraging loving bonding within primary relationships. Participants commonly state that the process is transformational on a deep level.
Using creativity Eros and Continuum we can explore and create new pathways of a fluid and creative world inside which can ride the waves of our social nervous system in new and rejuvenating ways…
Sound shape, color and other essential sensory ingredients, support conditions and can hold a restful relational field of safe and interesting creative awareness.
It has a moving wisdom like the echo of our birth sequence, that is easily connected to the nature and ease of an ocean wind.
Our current life in the present moment Is a creative continuum that has a clear forward, access to a life in a field that creates interesting permission for bigger things to emerge from the center of ourselves.
Why not have all these facets?
Why not let them shine?
We can play with a menu:
• Sequence
• Sounds
• Shapes
• Awareness of pleasurable movements
• Creative Embryonic Exploration
• Exploring gravity
• Restorative Capacity
• One Cell Presence
A Womb Surround Process Workshop is a therapeutic group experience designed to help individuals access and heal early pre- and perinatal imprints—memories and patterns formed in the womb, during birth, or in early infancy. These workshops, often based on the work of Ray Castellino, provide a safe, supportive environment where participants can explore how their earliest experiences have shaped their nervous system, emotions, and relational patterns.
Key Elements of a Womb Surround Process Workshop:
1. Small, Intimate Group – Typically 4-6 participants, ensuring deep, personal work with close support.
2. Facilitated Process – A trained facilitator guides participants through somatic (body-based) explorations, gentle regression, and healing experiences.
3. Intentions & Resonance – Each person sets an intention for healing, and the group serves as a resonant field to support that healing.
4. Repatterning & Integration – Participants may revisit and shift early imprints by experiencing new, supportive interactions and somatic releases.
5. Safety & Co-Regulation – The emphasis is on creating a safe, attuned space where nervous system healing can take place.
People who attend these workshops often seek healing from birth trauma, attachment wounds, or deep-seated patterns affecting their lives. It’s a gentle but profound way to reconnect with early
Working in a warm pool brings the potential and possibilities of a womb surround to deeper and in more buoyant ease and offers the participant an option of using the water or doing a process in the traditional setting indoors (om land).
My collaboration with Maya Kokatay is a creative journey working together through our trainees with Ray Castellino and John and Anna Chitty.
This workshop will have up to 5 participarts and an assistant or two.
